UV400 is a form of ultraviolet radiation protection associated with sunglasses. Nowadays it has been used more with car and building window film. UV400 will show that your glasses or window glass film will protect you from ultra violet almost 100 %.
UV 400 is able to prevent UVA/UVB rays of 99 to 100%. It is called “UV400” because it can prevent UV rays of short wavelength from 290 nanometer until 400 nanometer. UVA and UVB are defined by their wavelength range. The range of UVA is 320-400 nm, and the range of UVB is 290-320 nm. For UV ray of shorter wavelength than 290 nm or in the range of 200-290 nm, it will be called as UVC. So the UVC is a shortest wavelength UV or a highest frequency UV and it is the most dangerous ray. However the UVC ray is absorbed completely by earth’s ozone layer. So there is no UVC ray from sun get through our earth surface. UV400 is a higher protection level than protection of European standard, EN 1836:2005 which allows UV ray of 380nm transmit through 5%. Therefore the UV400 standard is suitable and necessary for countries in tropical area or near equator like Thailand.
Choosing a window film product which has UV400 mark can make sure we will be safe from UVA and UVB that are dangerous and harmful for skin and eyes. They are the cause of melanin color change, making skin dark/dull, harm skin and relate to aging including several types of skin cancer.
